Guide 06

How often to pump an aerobic septic system

Sludge builds in the trash tank and sometimes in aeration chambers — timing depends on use and measurements.

There is no single statewide calendar that fits every house. Pumping frequency depends on household size, water use, and measured sludge depth.

During the installer two-year window, sludge depth is supposed to be checked on the schedule in the rule. After that, owners who DIY should still measure, and owners on a service plan should expect written sludge notes.

If an alarm trips from a full pump tank, pumping or repairs may be needed immediately — do not wait for an annual date.

An installer credential on the Department of Environmental Quality roster does not by itself prove the company pumps tanks. This directory tags pumping only when an earlier check suggested that work. Confirm pumping when you call.

Ask whether the pump-out covers the trash tank, the aeration chamber, or both, and whether they dispose of the waste legally. Price and access (lids, distance, weather) change the job.

Quick answers

Is there a statewide pumping calendar?

No. Household use and measured sludge depth matter more than a fixed month.

Does every listed company pump tanks?

No. Pumping is a separate service. Confirm it directly.

Use the directory as a starting point.

Ask the company to confirm your system type, exact task, property coverage, timing, and price. A directory record does not replace an on-site evaluation.
